Mayfield Pre-School

Our Ethos and Curriculum

At Mayfield Pre-School, we nurture children’s development by following their interests and encouraging learning through play. Our varied activities help build confidence, independence, and curiosity. We use a balanced approach—combining adult modelling, child-led exploration, and peer learning—to create a rich and supportive environment.

Children enjoy free-flow access to indoor and outdoor spaces, with regular visits to the local forest and village to explore the wider community. We work in close partnership with parents, recognising them as the experts on their children and building strong, trusting relationships.

We believe children learn best when they feel happy, safe, and supported. That’s why we focus first on their personal, social, and emotional wellbeing. Our staff take time to get to know each child—their interests, strengths, and preferred ways of learning. We then plan engaging, play-based activities tailored to each child, guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework

" If it doesn't benefit children, then why are we doing it?"  Ruth Swailes

Outdoor learning isn’t just play—it’s purposeful, powerful, and personal.
At Mayfield Pre-School, we believe the natural world offers endless opportunities for children to explore, grow, and thrive.

Learning is hands-on and conversation-rich, helping children grow through meaningful interactions and experiences.

We are lucky to be able to offer outdoor learning experiences that support children to build on their knowledge and skills, developing meaningful links in their learning.

We utilise our beautiful garden, soft-surfaced climbing and play area, large sand pit, nature corner and mud kitchen every day and we reguarly explore our beautiful surroundings in the nearby meadow.

Outdoor play enhances children’s development in ways that indoor environments can’t always replicate. It supports physical health, creativity, and emotional wellbeing—while promoting a lifelong love of nature and active lifestyles.
